Kitchen splashback ideas?

So with my kitchen makeover going along swimmingly, my thoughts have turned to the splashback. At the moment, the splashback is the same laminate as the benchtops. But after seeing so many gorgeous beadboard examples, I'm thinking that may be the way to go.

These photos show the existing laminate splashback, but I was thinking of something more like this....

or these from The Lettered Cottage

or this...
...from here

Now, replacing the laminate with beadboard would be fairly straightforward, but I do have a few concerns. The beadboard I used to cover those hideous bricks is actually an MDF panel. So whether it will stand up to the rough and tumble of steam from the cooktop and the odd spill from the sink is what I need to consider.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has these beadboard splashbacks, and how practical they are. Would you have them again, or are they more trouble than they're worth? Or should I just tile the whole area with subway tile, which is my other option?  I know many of you are seasoned renovators, so I'm counting on you for the lowdown!

  1. Love both ideas... don't know anything about beadboard in kitchens... and you know I am a sucker for white gloss subways. Interested to hear others experience with the boarding. A-M xx

  2. I have beadboard splashbacks and have had them for around 5 years or so with no problems at all. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. At the time they weren't commonplace in the UK so I had to have my cabinet maker make them for me from boards - he used water resistant MDF which is green and can be safely used in kitchen and bathrooms. I have had no warping or any problems at all. Go for it!

  3. Love the beadboard idea Kerri. I know that friends of ours used beadboard that was made of ply, not MDF in their kitchen and bathroom. Not sure if that is something you could use? Whatever you decide on, I just know it is going to look fabulous. How great does your white cabinetry look - yay you!! Hope you have a wonderful weekend and a lovely Mothers Day ~ Tina xx

  4. Kerri - Either way it's going to look fabulous. I am partial to tile (and love white subway tiles), but since joining blog land a few months ago, I have to confess that we've been considering the beadboard. Like you, I wondered how practical it was, so thanks for posting this. I look forward to reading everyone's comments. I wonder if the beadboard is a trend that will pass . . . it looks great though and we are addicted to beadboard (especially in our bathroom, so I guess that tells me that it's water-resistant). Can't wait to see what you decide!

  5. I love subway tiles and I love beadboard (it looks great in those images). Wouldn't the combination of water resistant MDF and several coats of paint make them more hardy? Rxx

  6. Love the subway tiles....love the bead board! Either way it will look terrific as does the rest of the kitchen. A wonderful makeover. Thank you for your kind words to me.

  7. Kerri, I don't know if you know or not but they do make a tile bead board. I have used it clients homes and it is wonderful. It comes in a 3o" height so it could be cut in half to fit behind your counter. I like the beadboard look. I imagine if you paint and really use a good finish coat on the Mdf board it will hold up fine. It would be the same as a wall painted. You will love all the nice changes you are making either way, Happy Friday,Kathysue

  9. In my kitchen beadboard was going to be too civilised so I used rough horizontal planking, and plate glass behind the stove, painted on the back side and with the edges ground. Simple, unobtrusive and dead easy.

  10. Hi Kerry,

In my old kitchen I had the beadboard backsplash (thats our Cdn term for it). Mine was the mdf you were referring to and painted in a semi-gloss finish for durability. It held up very well and looked fantastic. Either way beadboard or subway, which I love too, will look terrific in your kitchen.

  12. I think the board would be great, would tie in with the board that covered the bricks up.

Another idea could be mirror. Would still keep the classic look but add just an extra little splash of glamour. You could get it cut to measure and just glue to the laminate.

whatever you put up, its going to look amazing!

  13. Hi if I was going to use the beadboard I would use the waterproof MDF that was suggested or the tiles that look like beadboard would be even better. We discussed splashbacks on the Decorating Forum and came up with so many options. One that might interest you is pressed tin- it looked fantastic. If you want the link send me an email and then you can see the pictures of it that members of the forum posted

  14. I do love the look but if you cook quite a bit, I might be concerned. I do think if you had the right top coat it would hold up, though. These peeks at your kitchen are gorgeous!

  15. I love Jules' idea of mirror or I was going to suggest glass for a timeless look...more expensive though I know but I've heard that painting plain glass works just fine if you wanted an accent colour. Whatever you do will be fabulous I know! And shall I book your trip to Canberra to do mine??

  16. I have beadboard in my kitchen and I love it!!! Once in a while I have to use a bit more elbow grease to clean it.. especially when my husband cooks.. but it comes off easily!!

  18. Don't do it would be my suggestion. I inherited a kitchen when we bought the house, 5 years ago.New kitchen from a reputable kitchen firm in brisbane, Dana Kitchens. The previous owners used boarding for the splashbacks. It's now peeling, looks disgusting, especially around the stove. I'm finally doing the fixup. I'm leaning to tiles, but worry about grout.
So, on reflection the question is, how long do you want it to last?

  20. I am in no way, shape or form a professional interior designer, but I do know that I love the look of subway tile! The beadboard is nice too, I'd have the same concerns as you, would it hold up? Oh, and is that chalkboard paint I see on that refrigerator?? ;)

  21. Dear Kerri,
As a huge Sophie Dahl fan, I love the subway tiles in her 'kitchen' It's actually not her kitchen, but just a kitchen in a house that they use for the show !! .... but, the tiles look wonderful. I also love the beadboard...we call it tongue and groove here in the U.K, but, I'm not sure how it would stand up to the harsh conditions of a kitchen. I haven't been much help but, good luck choosing. XXXX

  22. Just found your blog. WOW! What a transformation! I'm so impressed. I have beadboard in my house, but not as a backsplash so I can't help there. It has weathered fine on the back of our kitchen bar though.

Good luck! Can't wait to see what you choose.

  23. Hi Kerri. With the images you have chosen here .. if you look closely, both kitchens have ovens with built in splash back behind the cooktop (and the other has a steel splashback). I 'think' with fire safety ratings etc you might need to rethink the board option. Perhaps, likes Jules said, a mirror or glass one might be better. Also, the ones you like have high contrast elements (black or dark grey etc) whereas yours is quite monochromatic. Maybe adding the mirror, which would reflect opposite area (dining, livign???) it might add the contrast you desire without adding an extra colour. Well, that's my 2cents worth .. hope I didn't make it more confusing? (-: Linda
